Police gets special metal detecting kit

Police in the UK will have their safety enhanced during the course of their work with a new metal detecting kit known as the e-Glove. This device is strapped around one’s hand, where it will detect a suspect during a pat down whether there are metal objects under his clothes – ranging from switchblades to knives and any other potentially nasty surprise. Priced at 100 quid a pop, it will vibrate silently whenever it detects any metal. Currently, the e-Glove is on trial at the Leicestershire Police Station in the UK and will soon be handed out to bobbies all over the UK once the trial period is over.

This Sensation Lounge Chair, as it is called, is apparently the ultimate for relaxation. Not only can the user recline nicely, but there is a screen there for watching anything you want to watch. If you are going to relax, I would suggest watching something like Planet Earth.

Some of you might notice that the screen on this guy seems a little…small, and I would agree with them. It doesn’t look any more than 12 inches along its diagonal. Isn’t there any way to make it so a big-screen can be mounted there or something? Man, that would be the way to watch a movie.

HP’s iPad comparison misses the point

In an apparent bid to ease its employees’ concerns about the iPad, HP showed them how its forthcoming tablet computer compared with Apple’s device. Assuming the specs are genuine – and the gadget blogs discussing them appear to think that they are – it shows a misunderstanding of just what makes the iPad special.

In a side-by-side comparison of specs, HP points out areas where it has the “advantage” over the iPad and areas where Apple poses a “threat”. HP’s advantages include a faster processor, a card reader slot and not one but two cameras. Apple does better on screen resolution, battery life and price, however……

All of that seems to ignore the biggest problem HP – and Microsoft – will have in establishing the PC tablet and that’s the ecosystem surrounding it. The operating system the iPad uses has been designed specifically as a touch screen interface. The HP Slate uses “Windows 7 Home Premium + HP touch-optimized UI”. That just doesn’t fill me with confidence.

What’s more, Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch have ‘trained’ millions of people to use the iPad OS and helped to establish a store full of games and apps that can be used on it.

The specs for the Slate look impressive but I don’t believe consumers are very sensitive to specs. Apple seems to understand that in a way PC manufacturers don’t.

Nokia Making a Tablet Too

A Finnish analyst says Nokia’s preparing a touchscreen tablet “for fall release.” If confirmed, it won’t be the first time that Nokia tries a tablet format. I just hope they don’t take any notes from their sadprevious efforts.
